Rock fragment content in soils shift root foraging behavior in xerophytic species

چکیده
Root traits associated with resource foraging, including fine-root branching intensity, root hair, and mycorrhiza, may change in soils that vary rock fragment content (RFC), while how these covary at the level of individual order is largely unknown. We subjected two xerophytic species, Artemisia vestita (subshrub) Bauhinia brachycarpa (shrub), to increasing RFC gradients (0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, v v− 1) an arid environment measured related foraging. hair density mycorrhizal colonization both species decreased order, but increased third- or fourth-order roots high RFCs (50% 75%) compared low RFCs. The tend produce more hairs than mycorrhizas under For intensity were negatively correlated length diameter across Rockiness reduced comparing rock-free soil. At same RFC, A. had thicker lower B. tended hairs. Our results suggest soil conditions stimulated greater foraging functions higher orders. found evidence for a investment symbioses as opposed building extensive system rocky soils. studied, brachycarpa, took different approaches through distinctive trait syndromes components.

Gaze shift behavior on video as composite information foraging
The ability to predict, given an image or a video, where a human might fixate elements of a viewed scene has long been of interest in the vision community. However, one point that is not addressed by the great majority of computational models is the variability exhibited by different observers when viewing the same scene, or even by the same subject along different trials. Here we present a mod...
متن کاملUpdate on Root Nutrient Foraging Root Nutrient Foraging
During a plant’s lifecycle, the availability of nutrients in the soil is mostly heterogeneous in space and time. Plants are able to adapt to nutrient shortage or localized nutrient availability by altering their root system architecture to efficiently explore soil zones containing the limited nutrient. It has been shown that the deficiency of different nutrients induces root architectural and m...
متن کاملAccurate phase-shift velocimetry in rock.
Spatially resolved Pulsed Field Gradient (PFG) velocimetry techniques can provide precious information concerning flow through opaque systems, including rocks. This velocimetry data is used to enhance flow models in a wide range of systems, from oil behaviour in reservoir rocks to contaminant transport in aquifers. Phase-shift velocimetry is the fastest way to produce velocity maps but critical...
متن کاملCalculation of tunnel behavior in viscoelastic rock mass
Wall displacements and ground pressure acting on the lining of a tunnel increase with time. These time-dependent deformations are both due to face advance effect and to the time-dependent behavior of the rock mass. Viscoelastic materials exhibit both viscous and elastic behaviors. Thorough this study, the effect of different linear viscoelastic models including Maxwell, Kelvin and Kelvin-Voigt...
متن کاملAphid Species Affect Foraging Behavior of Coccinella septempunctata (Coccinellidae: Coleoptera).
BACKGROUND Flowers are admirable in scenic good looks and artistic beautification. These are also playing necessary roles in therapeutic preparations. Aphid is an important sucking pest of various flowers in ornamental territories and it is generally controlled by predators, so it was necessary to evaluate which aphid species affect the predator more or less. MATERIALS AND METHODS Biocontrol ...
